Martha Dwyer was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. She graduated cum laude from Harvard University, with a major in English History and Literature, in 1974. She received her JD from Columbia Law School in 1977, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and received her MBA from Columbia Business School at the same time.

Martha Dwyer spent many years practicing at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. She has had her own practice for approximately 13 years.

Martha Dwyer is a member of the American Bar Association and its committee on LLCs, Partnerships and Unincorporated Entities.  She is also a member of the Bar Association of the City of New York and a member of its Corporation Law Committee.

Martha Dwyer is a member of the Board of Directors of The Southbury Training School Foundation and is chairperson of its Development Committee. The Southbury Training School Foundation provides amenities to the residents of Southbury Training School, an intermediate care facility for persons suffering from mental retardation which is located in Southbury Connecticut, and operates a guardianship program for over 200 individuals suffering from mental retardation throughout the State of Connecticut.

Martha Dwyer is a member of the Board of Directors of Voice of the Retarded, a national organization concerned with quality of life and choice of residential options for persons with mental retardation and serves as VOR’s Pro Bono Coordinating Counsel. VOR is involved in litigation in a number of states throughout the country and is utilizing the services of pro bono counsel in several of these states.

Martha Dwyer is also a member of the board of directors of the cooperative corporation that owns the building in which she resides, in New York, NY.
